Europe’s largest R&D subsidy programmes
The European Union plays a fundamental role in supporting research, development and innovation (R&D&I) through a series of strategic grant programmes designed to promote competitiveness, sustainability and technological excellence in Europe. The common objective of these programmes is to stimulate innovation, accelerate the green and digital transition, and strengthen cooperation between Member States to solve major societal challenges.

A major pillar of the EU’s strategy for stimulating innovation and meeting the major challenges of the 21st century.

Among the flagship initiatives, Horizon Europe occupies a central place. This is the EU’s most ambitious research and innovation programme, with a budget of almost €95.5 billion for the period 2021-2027. It covers a wide range of projects, from basic science to applied innovation, focusing on priorities such as the fight against climate change, health and cutting-edge technologies.
The Innovation Fund focuses on clean technologies and projects with a high potential for reducing carbon emissions. This programme aims to support disruptive innovations in renewable energy, energy storage systems and clean industrial processes.
For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and technology start-ups, Eurostars is an essential lever. This programme, operating under the joint initiative of the EU and several non-EU countries, funds transnational collaborative projects, offering companies valuable access to research networks and the European market.
The LIFE programme is dedicated to the environment and climate action. It funds innovative projects that promote the preservation of biodiversity, adaptation to climate change and the sustainable management of natural resources. This programme is a key driver in the implementation of the European Green Pact.
Finally, the EIC Accelerator (European Innovation Council Accelerator) is designed to support innovators, entrepreneurs and SMEs in the development and marketing of disruptive technologies. It offers combined funding (grants and equities) to help overcome the technological and commercial risks associated with innovation.
The Digital Europe programme also plays a crucial role in Europe’s digital transformation. With a focus on developing digital capabilities, it funds projects in the fields of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, high-performance computing and digital skills training. The programme aims to strengthen the EU’s digital sovereignty and make strategic technologies accessible to the whole economy.
